ASK!: Like a refill?
Published January 25, 2009 at 3 p.m.
Luke and Zach have seen ads for refilled printer cartridges that are much cheaper than new ones, and they wanted to know whether the refilled versions are worth it.
The major manufacturers of new cartridges have said the refilled versions can't print as many pages as new ones can. A New York Times article from 2006 points to two studies - one by Hewlett-Packard, another by Consumer Reports - saying that refilled cartridges cost as much as or more than new ones on a per-page basis.
Not so, says Tom Ryan, a master franchisee for Cartridge World, a major seller of refilled cartridges. Ryan says that compared with new cartridges, his products produce equivalent - and sometimes better - results at savings of 30 percent to 40 percent, guaranteed.
Another option is refilling them yourself with a refilling kit. Although a colleague assures me that it's a fairly easy process, the directions I found online look like a final exam for a hazmat team.
Here's a new poser:
What song is played in honor of the vice president of the United States? - Kitty, Kiowa
