Media News to own Daily Camera

Published February 27, 2009 at 12:05 a.m.

The closure of the Rocky Mountain News is expected to have little noticeable impact on the Boulder Daily Camera, company officials said.

But the Camera's ownership will change, with Rocky parent E.W. Scripps shedding its 50 percent stake in the Boulder newspaper this year.

The Camera ultimately will be fully owned by the publisher of The Denver Post and will keep publishing after today's shuttering of the Rocky.

Under the arrangement, Scripps will transfer its stake in the Camera's parent company to Post publisher MediaNews Group.

MediaNews CEO Dean Singleton told a news conference in Denver on Thursday that no major changes are planned for the Camera.

The Post is expected to share stories with the Camera, as the Rocky has done until now.

"We think we can put these companies together to create new synergies and increase new revenue," Singleton told reporters.

Scripps and MediaNews Group hold 50 percent stakes in Camera parent Prairie Mountain Publishing.

Prairie Mountain Publishing also publishes the Colorado Daily, the Broomfield Enterprise and other Colorado newspapers.

Singleton said no layoffs are planned at this time at the Camera, and employees' wages will stay the same. Management employees also are expected to be retained.

Asked about the future of the Camera, Mark Contreras, Scripps senior vice president of newspapers, echoed Singleton: "Really, there is no dramatic change happening there."
