Firefighters are mopping up a brush fire in Arvada that destroyed one home and one outbuilding.
"The wind is affecting visibility, so we're fighting it from the upwind side," said Scott Pribble, spokesman for Arvada fire.
The blaze apparently started as a weed fire around 3:30 p.m. near the intersection of 72nd Avenue and Oak Street.
The flames then followed the train tracks west out to Highway 72 and Highway 93, burning mostly grass and weeds.
Along the way, it also consumed a house and outbuilding at 12229 W. 80th Avenue, halfway between Alkire and Simms streets.
"We don't know if anyone was occupying the house or hurt," said Pribble.
A number of other nearby homes were evaucated after residents saw the smoke. But firefighters managed to keep the fire away from the other structures.
"Most of the people are hanging out, standing on the porches," said Pribble.
He estimated that the fire was under control in about an hour's time, with most of the smoke on the east side already dissipated.
The cause of the blaze has not been determined.
