Rockies report: Officials tour White Sox's spring home
Published February 23, 2009 at 11:37 p.m.
A group of Rockies officials - including team president Keli McGregor, general manager Dan O'Dowd, assistant to the general manager Dan Duquette and minor league director Mark Gustafson - spent Monday touring the Chicago White Sox's new training facility in Glendale, Ariz.
The Rockies, who have trained in Tucson since their inception in 1993, are looking at moving to the Phoenix area as soon as 2011. Most talk has centered on a two-team facility that would be shared with Arizona.
McGregor said the Rockies hope to use their time in spring training to explore possibilities for a new training site.
Tucson is the Rockies' No. 1 choice, but local officials have not been able to gain support for a new training site.
QUICKLY
* The Rockies will play an intrasquad game this afternoon, then participate in the annual Dan Felix golf tournament in preparation for Wednesday's spring training opener against Arizona. The golf tournament is a fundraiser for Tucson charities.
* Right-handed pitcher Matt Belisle, a long shot in the fifth starter battle, has been slowed by right forearm tightness. The only other pitcher on a restricted program is left-hander Randy Flores, recovering from shoulder surgery.
* Infielder Luis Gonzalez became the 60th and final player to report. Gonzalez, a long shot to make the team, had been delayed in Venezuela. He is attempting to come back after spending last year in Japan, where he was banned for testing positive for amphetamines.
HE SAID IT
"Recovery time when we get out of sync is critical to doing what we need to do."
Clint Hurdle, Rockies manager.
