Rockies report: Murton has inside track
Published February 22, 2009 at 8:37 p.m.
TUCSON Matt Murton would seem to have an edge in the battle for an extra outfield spot.
Murton is a right-handed hitter, and other than projected center fielder Ryan Spilborghs, the bulk of the Rockies outfield candidates are left-handed hitters.
Brad Hawpe is set in right field. Seth Smith is the leading candidate in left field and his competition includes third baseman Ian Stewart and Carlos Gonzalez, both of whom are left-handed hitters, as is expected center field backup Scott Podsednik.
Dan Ortmeier, who is on a minor league contract, is the only other right-handed- hitting outfielder in the running, although Hurdle said he won't hesitate to put Jeff Baker in a corner outfield spot. Baker did that job last year.
Clint Barmes also has shown the ability to play the outfield, but Hurdle said he looks at Barmes as the starting second baseman and his outfield time would be more if there's an injury or a double-switch than a plan to get Barmes outfield playing time.
