MEITUS: Film trivia with a side of Vegemite
Published February 17, 2009 at 3 p.m.
When you're plopping down on the couch with your big bag of popcorn to watch the Academy Awards on Sunday night, you're probably asking yourself: Which movie has the greatest connection to food?
Well, if the folks behind Australia have their way, it's that one. The public relations people have been on overdrive to find anything remotely connected to the movie, including food, to drum up interest in it both for the Academy Awards (it's nominated for costume design) and the release of the DVD on March 3.
One of the press releases mentioned the "Australia trend sweeping the country," which, call me crazy, passed me by. Australia has been in the news, unfortunately, for its terrible fires, but other than "throw a shrimp on the barbie," I'm not sure anyone is talking Australian foodspeak.
Nevertheless, I've made it my mission to find exciting food-related movie trivia. Last year we did a quiz for food and movie buffs, so I thought I'd find some new questions and answers for the trivial among us. That way, when the Academy Awards start to drag on - and on, and on - you can sing out, "Wow, Tom Cruise looks great, but who knows what Vegemite is?" (Answers at end of column.)
* 1. Name four of Kate's signature items in the film No Reservations. OK, no one saw the movie, so name one. Bonus points: Who is Lee Anne Wong and why do we care?
* 2. Is Pepper Potts in Iron Man named for pepper pot soup, pepper the spice or a red pepper?
* 3. In The Wrestler, how does a frustrated Mickey Rourke satisfy a difficult customer's request at the deli counter? Bonus: What is the deli item?
* 4. What time is dinner in Barcelona in the movie Vicky Cristina Barcelona?
* 5. What does WALL-E feed his little cockroach buddy?
* 6. What country still thinks Vegemite is fit for human consumption?
* And speaking of winners . . . Denver's Deborah Leebove, 34, was one of six national finalists who competed Friday in the Manischewitz Cook-Off in New York. Her "Mani" Meatloaves recipe didn't win, but it caught my eye in light of today's cover story on root vegetables. Its secret ingredient: borscht. (See her recipe online at RockyMountainNews.com/extras; all finalists at Manischewitz.com.)
Leebove's parents are familiar names in Denver: Her father is Rabbi Stephen Foster, longtime rabbi at Congregation Emanuel, and her mother, Joyce, was recently sworn in as a Colorado state senator.
Answers to movie trivia
1. Quail With Truffle Sauce. Bonus points: Wong was chef/consultant on the movie. Bravo Top Chef fans will recognize her as a finalist from Season 1.
2. Her nickname refers to a red pepper, for her red hair and freckles. Her real name is Virginia.
3. He eats from the container until it reaches the desired weight. Egg salad.
4. Midnight. Isn't that just so European? And trust me, no one is drinking warm milk.
5. Twinkie-type snack cakes called Kremies.
6. Australia. If you've ever had the yeast extract used as a spread on toast, you already know that it tastes like undiluted beef bouillon paste. Salty - omigosh.
