ASK!: Movies stay by popular demand
Published February 17, 2009 at 3 p.m.
Sarah asked the average length of time a movie plays in Denver.
The national figure is four weeks, said Dick Westerling, a spokesman for Regal Entertainment Group, which has nine theaters with 104 screens in the Denver area. He said Denver is roughly in line with the national average.
The numbers vary too much at the Landmark chain, which has four local theaters, for an average length of stay to make much sense, said local spokesman David Kimball. The shortest stay is one week, which is rare. Several years ago, films such as Like Water for Chocolate and Remains of the Day played for a year, but that hasn't happened recently.
It all depends on demand, Kimball said; as long as it's attracting viewers, a film will continue. The current hit, Slumdog Millionaire, is in its 13th week at Landmark's Esquire and probably will stay longer because of its Oscar best-picture nomination.
