ASK!: A really slow lane

Published February 16, 2009 at 6 p.m.

Joe said the highway department widened Interstate 225 to three lanes in each direction years ago but in some places striped the highway for just two lanes, and he wonders why.

The only spot widened to three lanes but striped for two is between East Second and East Sixth avenues, said Colorado Department of Transportation spokesman Bob Wilson. Plans to add a third lane there are on hold until a noise wall is built on the west side, as required by an environmental study indicating that a substantial sound increase would result.

The wall hasn't been built because money isn't available. Wilson said CDOT hopes to get funding in the next year or two.

Other sections of I-225 striped for two lanes aren't wide enough for a third lane, Wilson said.
