2009 Summer Camp Guide features recession-busting ideas

Parents of campers aren't letting a sinking economy capsize their children's summertime plans, although many are tightening the canteen belt a few notches.

Whether it's sailing camp or old-fashioned day camp, directors across the nation say their programs are staying afloat, and they predict they'll meet last summer's number of 6.2 million sleep-away campers.

"Some camps are reporting that their registration is stronger than ever," said Betsy Thamert, executive director of the Rocky Mountain chapter of the American Camp Association. "These camps have been in the business for a long time, so their returning families understand the value of camp."

Still, it's not all happy trails.

First-time camper registration is down nationally from this time last year, and parents of returning campers are looking for ways to trim expenses, said Jeff Solomon, executive director of the National Camp Association.

"When we are in down times, people will choose less-expensive programs ," Solomon said.

Thamert's best advice to parents: It doesn't hurt to ask, whether it's for discounts, financial aid or cost-saving advice. Camps aren't immune to recession, and they want your business, she said. Many camps are running unprecedented promotions and boosting scholarships in response to the economic downturn.

"Camp directors are passionate about making sure kids are able to attend camp," she said, "and parents realize it's an investment in their children's future."

At anywhere from $300 to $1,800 a week, however, camp can be a hefty investment when family budgets are tight. So here are tips from our experts on ways parents can save - so that everyone can be a happy camper.

Choose simpler camps

In the summer-camp world, the adage "you get what you pay for" is true only to an extent, Solomon said. Giving your child the memory- making experience of camp doesn't mean you have to strive for molding the next Tiger Woods or Tony Hawk.

"If you're paying $500 as opposed to $1,500, you might not get water-skiing," Solomon said. "But are you going to have a less-safe, less-fun experience? No."

Donate items or barter services

Times are tough for everyone, so camp directors might jump at a chance to trade tuition for gear or help. Get creative, Solomon said: Maybe you own a business with potential camp supplies such as food, linens or sporting goods. Donate a few basketballs or a canoe for tuition.

"Or maybe you have a background in PR," Thamert said. "Offer to help with marketing." Running successful programs takes lots of skills; doctors and nurses are always hot summer-camp commodities.

Put campers to work

Teenagers can pare tuition by working at camp. Let them cook, wait tables or become counselors-in-training. They'll enjoy camp life and gain a work ethic. One caveat from Solomon: The competition is fierce.

If the teen can't swing a camp job, start a camp-tuition jar and ask for help filling it. Whether it's through baby-sitting, washing cars or flipping burgers, having your kids invest in their own camp experience can make it more valuable, Thamert said.

Stay close to home

Sending your children cross-country for camp costs more than driving them into the hills of Colorado - or down the street.

If you need a financial hand, seek it out

Camp directors are receiving more requests for assistance, and many are responding in unusual ways, Thamert said. "One camp is planning on doing monthly promotions with some sort of discount," she said. "Some camps are doubling the amount of scholarships they're giving out."

Check on available assistance. Don't assume you won't qualify, Thamert said, noting that more than 75 percent of ACA camps offer some sort of financial aid, which last year amounted to more than $39 million.

Forget about fashion statements

"There is no need to go out and buy expensive camping gear and clothing for your children," Thamert said. Try thrift shops or discount stores. Borrow items from friends or family. Or ask camp directors about renting gear; sometimes fees are so nominal that renting makes more sense than investing in an item that might never be used again.

Consider nonprofits

Nonprofit camps - such as Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts or YMCA - often fall on the lower end of the price range, and they tend to offer more financial scholarships, Solomon said.

Hit up Uncle Sam

Check with your accountant or camp director about your eligibility for tax breaks for tuition. If the camp is a licensed child-care provider and you normally pay for child care so that you can work during the summer, tuition might qualify under the Child and Dependent Care Credit. Or you might be able to use a pretax expense account for tuition.

Pinching pennies?

Here are some ideas:

* Sign up siblings for a multiple-child discount.

* Register as soon as possible for an early bird discount. Deadlines vary, so check with your camp.

* Pay upfront when you register and receive an early payment discount.

* Check with groups or organizations you belong to - rec centers, churches, synagogues - that offer camps and ask whether they offer discounts to members.

* Call your childhood camp for a camp- alumni discount.

* Stick with last year's camp for a returning- camper discount.

* Take two sessions for a multisession discount.

* Bring a friend for a referral discount.

Shop around

Most people want the best value for their hard-earned dollar, especially in these down economic times. When seeking summer camps, that means doing your homework.

Find the best camp for your child and your budget. Start with programs such as the American and the National camp associations. They can help you find camps that meet your needs, a service they provide at no cost.

Then scour those individual camp Web sites and interview each director before making your choices.

* American Camp Association, acacamps.org

ACA accredits more than 2,400 camps, which means they meet up to 300 standards for health, safety and program quality. Rocky Mountain Chapter, acarockymountain.org

* National Camp Association, summercamp.org

All camps recommended by the NCA are accredited in accordance with government regulations and have received positive evaluations from the NCA and from parents.
