ASK!: Inaugural miscount

Published February 8, 2009 at 3 p.m.

Carol noted that during his inaugural address, President Obama said he was the 44th American to have taken the oath of office, and she wondered if that was correct.

Several readers, including Bev and Isaac, knew that it isn't true. Although Obama is the 44th president, he is the 43rd American to have taken the oath.

The reason for the discrepancy is that Grover Cleveland, the only president to have served nonconsecutive terms, is counted twice, as the 22nd and 24th president. Consecutive terms are counted only once.
