Hey DJ, DJ Bitwise
Published February 5, 2009 at 7 p.m.
With roots in old-school hip-hop and '80s electro, DJ Bitwise concocts a bass-heavy electro breakbeat sound that you can check out at clubs around town, including Beta Nightclub (1909 Blake St.) and Sutra Bar and Lounge (1109 Lincoln St.). He's also started a Denver-based Internet radio station, Recycle-Radio.com, which features weekly live audio and video streams showcasing our Mile High burgh's DJ talent. Check him out on the online waves every Tuesday evening - alongside Club Hoppin' vet DJ Beekay - or visit him at djbitwise.com or myspace.com/djbitwise. Right now, these are his three favorite cuts:
* Diverse - Ground Control
"This track has a chunky electro mid-percussion loop coupled to an amazing bass hit that shakes the walls every time it gets played. Only after I had played it out many times did I find it was actually written by a producer in Denver."
* Lazy Moon - Groove Diggerz
"This track is a beautiful breakbeat track featuring a smooth female vocal layered over a strong breakbeat backbone with a touch of a reggae feel. The ladies swoon on the dance floor every time this track is played."
* Laird and John Pickett - Ohhhh Ma Ma Ma
"I love real hip-hop. No, I did not say rap - I said HIP-HOP! This track couples a strong funk grind to a great vocal hook and a strong hip-hop beat that creates a funky trip-hop track with true hip-hop roots. Funk, hip-hop, breakbeat-like samples - this track has it all."
