All golf tournaments have their favorites, and the Class 5A girls state tournament that begins today at Raccoon Creek has an established quartet of potential winners.

The 2007 medalist, Monarch's Brooke Collins, is back for another title shot. The previous winner, Becca Huffer of Littleton, also hopes to finish her senior year on top.

Grand Junction Central's Melissa Martin might be the most consistent golfer around, and Loveland's Bethany Buchner, who has missed some of the top invitationals, is another serious threat.

All four placed in the top five last season.

The sophomore class could challenge that group, though. It's led by Andi Hibbert, the Jefferson County League Class 5A champion from Lakewood, and also includes Sarah Moore of Arapahoe and Kasha Scott of defending team champion Cherry Creek.

In Class 4A, Colorado Academy's Elizabeth Kresock is the favorite. But Evergreen's Chance Forbes, the Jeffco 4A champ, has a link to Rolling Hills Country Club, the state site this year.

"It's a lot like Hiwan, my home course," Forbes said. "The greens were designed by the same guy, so I think I have a pretty good shot."

In 5A, Hibbert is the hottest of that strong sophomore trio.

She breezed through her regional tournament, at Fox Hollow, with a 76, for an eight-shot victory, and Moore and Scott posted high scores in rough weather.

"I think that regionals was my best tournament this year," Hibbert said. "I seemed to be really in my element and comfortable with my swing."

Hibbert got another boost Saturday after playing Raccoon Creek.

"The course this year is playing a lot shorter (5,788 yards) than I remember state being in other years," she said. "That fits into my game. One of my strengths is off the tee, and I was hitting a lot of wedges into the greens. As long as I keep the putting under control, I should do OK."

Hibbert is in a different situation than her sophomore friends. Moore has Leslie McGetrick, who shot an excellent 70 at regionals, as a teammate and Scott has Tracy Saracino. Both are seniors and strong No. 1s.

Moore is looking for a little more confidence.

"I didn't play my best at regionals, but I don't think it's impossible for me (to excel at state)," Moore said. "The first thing I need to work on is the consistency of my shots."

McGetrick found consistency to be a bonus in her regional outing, carding a 1-under par.

"I started out bogey-bogey, but then I birdied the third hole," she said. "It was all just kind of working for me. I was hitting my drives the best I have all year."

* Where: Rolling Hills Country Club, 15707 W. 26th Ave., Golden.

* Course: Par: 73. Length: 5,809 yards. Slope: 137. Rating: 73.6.

* Format: The format for both tournaments is 36 holes, medal play, plus team championship. Teams are made up of three or four players. Each day of play, the highest score on the four-player teams is dropped. The best three-player total for 36 holes wins the team title.
