Arapahoe fakes its way to victory

Warrior girls' lacrosse rally against Colorado Academy keyed by moves at net

During Arapahoe girls lacrosse team practice, failing to put a fake on a goalkeeper during a one-on-one chance is subject to the time- honored punishment of doing a series of push-ups.

The Warriors' Adison Rounds might have been forced to endure some sore arms Tuesday after missing a couple of early open penalty chances in Arapahoe's match against Colorado Academy in the quarterfinals of the state tournament.

But Rounds quickly learned from her mistakes and her teammates followed suit as Arapahoe put together an abrupt and dominant comeback for an 11-9 victory against the Mustangs at Littleton Public Schools Stadium.

The fourth-seeded Warriors (13-4) extended their winning streak to eight games and will play the winner of today's match between Golden and top-seeded Cherry Creek in the semifinals.

"In practice, every time we do push-ups if we don't fake the goalie," Rounds said. "I just had to put everything together and realize that (Colorado Academy's Megan McGinnis) is an amazing goalie and we definitely had to put the ball around her and not serve it right to her."

Rounds finished with four goals and one assist, scoring all her goals after missing the easy early chances and after Arapahoe quickly fell behind 6-1.

The Warriors, who enjoyed a 29-11 advantage in shots on goal, soon began finishing their chances, outscoring Colorado Academy 10-3 the rest of the way.

Rounds converted consecutive penalty opportunities late in the first half to help Arapahoe trim the Mustangs' lead to 6-4 at halftime. The Warriors opened the second half with three consecutive goals and broke a 7-7 tie with another three goals in a row, which featured a goal and an assist from Rounds, to take the lead for good.

"We know how well we play together and we knew how well we could put it together," said Rounds, who leads the Warriors with 49 goals and 26 assists. "We just had to get our fundamentals together, like our passing and settling on the attack and doing the smart things."

Arapahoe also received two goals and one assist from Kate Spring and one goal and one assist from Stacey Birlson and Megan O'Donnell. Ali Abramovitz led Colorado Academy (11-5) with two goals and one assist.

"We were still playing phenomenally (early), but they made a couple of great shots, and that happens," Arapahoe coach Katie Peska said. "It was only a quarter of the way into the game, so it wasn't a time to panic."
